Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor Fit For Me (I Like the Old Version Better) I've used PhD socks in Ultralight, Light, and Medium for years. I was excited to see these socks because of their claimed increase in durability. My others always seemed to wear out either in the big toe area, or on the balls of my feet. However, I really can't wear these due to fit issue. I'm a skinny dude, with pretty small calves, and even with that, the size L (my usual size) are restrictively tight in the calf area. The uppermost elastic band is just too small. And despite that, the foot is actually too big. It's sloppy loose on my foot, to the point that I can only really wear them around the house - they bunch up and move around too much in a boot or shoe. As I mentioned, I've always worn a Size L in smart wool socks, but I don't think I could go down a size in these anyway because of the tight calf issue. I'm disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Product! Purchased these socks a day before hiking up Pikes Peak...in fairly new leather boots. Yes, I know...not the wisest decision. What was intended to be a 13.2 miles ascent to the summit, culminated in a 26 miles, 16K feet, 13 hr ascent/descent as high winds and 65 mph gusts shut down the roadway and Cog RR (my intended descent). Bottom line...these socks performed amazingly! Though thoroughly exhausted I was elated that I experienced no blisters...at all. Surprised and grateful! I wholeheartedly recommend these socks! Ended up buying three more pair the next day...I'm a believer!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Gone Downhill These are not even close to being as cushy and warm as the version sold two years ago. They are more like the Lightweight socks of two years ago, but without that special PhD cushion. I'll have to try some Heavyweights to see if the same performance is still available. Kinda disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I Tried Them I have been wearing Men's Hike Medium Crew sock for many years and have been happy with them. I will now be switching over to these PhD Outdoor Medium Crew sock as I think they perform even better. I am very very pleased with them. One thing to consider is that, as Smartwool staff told me, they fit far snugger than my old socks so wearing a liner sock is pretty much out of the question. However, the "snugness" does a great job of dissipating friction so I find liners absolutely unnecessary. I am pleased that Smartwool continues to improve their products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Official Sock of Winter? I'm finally going on my first ever ski trip this winter, after being an ultra-distance all-weather bicyclist most of my life I've been putting together a completely new outfit for a completely different type activity and my choice of footwear will obviously be crucial. When I saw the claim of a ski resort that they had an Official Sock I was skeptical at first but decided to check out the website. As a cyclist I had always prided myself on high quality clothing at much less than the price of retail. I got my first pair of Phd Crew socks and after trying them out on some bitterly cold mornings with my new footwear I realized that cutting corners when it comes to something as important as winter socks is something you can't and shouldn't do. I was so impressed with the comfort of the Phd socks I knew I needed at least a couple more pair before leaving town. They slip into a boot like they belong in there and like they own it. I'm obviously sold on Smartwool socks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definetly will be purchasing more pair. Socks are outstanding. I am a Firefighter and Paramedic. These socks go from boot to boot and in all types of enviroments and conditions. They hold up great, very comfortable and keep your feet dry and comfortable. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Luxury Padding in this Crew Sock I love the extra padding in this Smartwool Crew. The height of the sock is okay when new, but after washing it is too short. I would suggest that it be made a bit taller to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely warm and comfortable--more please. I've been using Phd socks for cycling for quite some time, but have always used the classic medium hiker sock for everyday use. Sadly, those socks don't stay up very well when hiking, so I decided to try these. So far, so great. They stay up and stay in place on my foot and have even kept my feet warm down to about 20 degrees on their own and down to 0 with a thin SmartWool liner sock. I'll definitely consider buying more once I see how well they hold up over time.
